WHAT IS THE NDIS?

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is the new system of disability support that is being introduced across Australia. The NDIS aims to make sure people with disability have the supports they need to do everyday activities. It also aims to give people with disability and their carers, more choice and control over the supports and services they use by providing them with individual funding.
For more information visit the NDIS website at www.ndis.gov.au

The NDIS will fund supports to increase the independence of people with disability and to help them to participate in activities in their communities.

These supports are complimented by other services which are referred to as 'mainstream services' such as employment, education, public housing, income support, public transport, or health services.  The NDIS may also pay for supports to build the capacity of the person with disability to use mainstream services. For example, training people with disability on how to use public transport.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN FOR PEOPLE WITH A DISABILITY?

Eligibility

For a person to be considered eligible for the NDIS they must:
  • Have a significant or permanent disability, or a need for early intervention
  • Be an Australian citizen, a permanent resident, or a protected Special Category Visa holder; and
  • Be under the age of 65.

Planning and funding

The NDIS empowers people with disability to plan for the lives they want by setting goals and providing the support to achieve their goals.
Eligible clients will receive individual funding to support their plan. As well as choosing the services, clients can also decide when, where and how they receive their supports.
Clients can also choose who and how to manage their funding and supports. This can include:
  • The Individual (self-managed) or a nominee; or
  • A Plan Management Provider; or
  • The National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA); or
  • A combination of the above three options

HOW CAN COUNCIL HELP YOU? – SERVICE GATEWAY

Connection to NDIS

As an approved NDIS Provider, Arab Council Australia is here to help people and especially Arabic speaking people, to connect and transition to the NDIS as smoothly as possible.  Arab Council Australia can:
  • Explain how the NDIS works
  • Help you find out if you’re eligible
  • Guide you through the application process including assistance to prepare for your planning meetings
  • Accompany you to your meetings with the NDIS to be your support and extra memory.

Best of all we can do this in Arabic and in a culturally appropriate way as we understand and appreciate different cultures and diversity.

We can also meet at a location that suits you, such as your home to make it easy to access our services.

Council also hopes to be able to reach out to those clients and their carers in the community that have not been accessing disability support due to various reasons and ensure that they are getting the support they need.

Support Coordination

Clients with particularly complex circumstances are eligible for supplementary funding to coordinate their supports. For more information about eligibility, please speak to our friendly staff.

For clients that are deemed eligible for support coordination by the NDIS, Arab Council Australia can provide services to:
  • Empower you to access and coordinate all your supports in your plan; and
  • Help you participate more in your community.

Council will assist you to set up your informal, mainstream and community supports, as well as funded supports, and make sure they are coordinated and running smoothly. We will also help identify where you might need additional supports as well as monitor the quality of the services delivering your supports to ensure they are meeting your expectations and the disability standards.

Most importantly we will be available to ensure supports are modified or in place in times of ‘crisis’.

Not eligible for NDIS?

If you are not eligible to access the NDIS, you can still work with Arab Council Australia. We can support you to get on the best path, and help you access any other disability schemes that can meet your requirements.
